Uganda's Energy Sector Prospects
We wish to put to record appreciation of all parties on the Government of the Federal
Republic of Germany for implementing their promise for the Bonn conference on renewable
energy, a report of which appears in the current issue by the GTZ Energy Advisor, Mr
Philippe Simonis. This event was also captioned on the last page of our May issue.
The Uganda delegation was of a top national character, led by no lesser the Minister for
energy and her technocrats.
Our subject however is to highlight contents of energy sources for potential investment,
as reflected in the '
Energy Sector Investment Guide by Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development
(MEMD) of June 2004
'. Some areas are quoted without alteration.
In her forward to the said publication, the Minister MEMD cites main sub-sector areas
where investment is foreseen to include, and I quote:
- Hydropower, large schemes;
- Hydropower, small schemes, such as mini- and micro-hydros;
- Biomass in general;
- Geothermal;
- Cogeneration;
- Gasification;
- Peat production;
- Afforestation;
- Wind;
- Solar; and,
- Petroleum, in particular exploration, pipeline extension, and trade.
As the article by the Energy Advisor in MEMD indicates, Uganda has taken the 'bull by the
horns' as the saying goes, in spearheading the regional effort to enhance adoption of
renewable energy use. We would like to comment Government for that.
In earlier issues,
Business Services Primer
has covered energy aspects in the country relatively widely in comparison to
other industry relevant aspects, largely because doors have been widely opened to it, thanks
to all concerned. It is our sincere hope that, while we will continue to cover the area of
energy, we will also build up our coverage of other matters / activities that are vital to
industrial / business growth, that are by no means less important.
Rather than cite more on the conference, we wish to advise that, you visit the site
www.renewables2004.de
on the internet. We also wish to say that our website that has been mentioned in
the past will be accessible starting July, 2004, where much of our write-up on the sector
can be viewed.
