An analysis of competitive strategies of
mobile phone providers in Uganda: Lessons
for other sectors.

Dr. Bruno Emwanu holds a B.Sc.
Degree in Mechanical Engineering of
Makerere University obtained in 1987,
a masters in engineering management
(1998) and a Ph.D. in strategy from
University of Witwatersrand in the
Republic of South Africa. He worked
with Nyanza Textile Industries Ltd. ,
commonly known as NYTIL in Uganda
for 6 years, then proceeded to Botswana and joined a medium
manufacturing and solar heating system company, Solar Power
for a while, prior to joining the Government of Botswana for 3 years, prior to proceeding to RSA for advanced studies. He now
brings his wealth of experience to the benefit of manufacturers in
Uganda Manufacturers Association. :
Dr. Bruno Emwanu reviews the developments in the
telecommunications sector, following its liberalization and entry
of foreign players, who over time, grew from the pioneer
enjoying the monopoly to great advantage, with the public
yearning for better services, through to entry of additional
investors that spurred lower tariffs, considerable network
extension, and pursuit of numerous ways to increase firm market
share, be side a greater effort by the regulatory authority to chart
out a customer / provider setting closer to situations in advanced
countries. This serves to emphasize the need for every firm to
brace for and take requisite measures to remain buoyant in an
ever-changing marketplace.
